Well this friday and saturday was kind of a bust. tapping at over 2,000 ft elevation and it didnt really warm up, and 2 feet of snow on the ground. Had a few taps at lower elevation but not much of a run. Anyone get a good run?

Same here not much of a run, most of my taps are higher elevation also so I did not expect much but it is still a little disappointing. Still had about one foot of snow on the hill, maybe Monday and Tuesday will be good. This year who knows?

I'm in the finger lakes also. Only got about 25 gallons of sap but considering this is my first year I'm pretty happy so far.

here we go, even up in the high elevation where I am sap is flowing. if the storm isn't too bad tomorrow, we will be boiling our first 40 gallons of sap down. and hopefully another run after the storm!

Boiled down 35 gallons of sap yesterday to just over 3 quarts of some nice syrup. First time we used our new 1/2 pint evaporator which made it interesting, but we learned a lot for next time. Lots of snow today but the weekend looks like things will start to run again.

We got the first flush of sap from Monday and Tuesday. 300 Gallons from 230 taps, got everything boiled down and in the evaporator and pulled off about a 1/2 gallon of dark syrup. The trees are just waking up so the sugar content is low.

It got down to zero early last night but the warmup is on today. SW wind but I am thinking I will get about a quart of sap per tap today. Hoping for a refreeze tonight and a warmup tomorrow, correct?
We got at least 20 inches on Wednesday so the snowshoes are back out. About 1/2 mile walk straight uphill good workout!

Sap finally broke lose for a few hours on Friday, Ran decent from 1:00 until sundown. At one point the releaser was dumping every 2 minutes and 15 seconds. Gravity shut down overnight but vacuum woods ran until it froze last night. Got around 1500 gallons of sap from the run off roughly 1,000 taps. Everything has been concentrated and going to boil the last 100 gallons of 10% today. Syrup started medium but is getting lighter. Tuesday on looks good, we need to make more syrup for maple weekend 1. Good luck everyone.

trees seem to be waking up and measuring just over 2% on the sugar maples. getting about 3/4 gallon per day per tap for the past 2 days. Small operation, will be boiling about 30-35 gallons on Friday. That is a good number for me

The total run ended up pretty good. Stopped a bit early on April 6, maybe could have collected for another week and another 50 gallons of sap. From 20 taps we got 3.5 gallons of syrup, enough for the small family and friends. Everyone is happy!

The way the long term forecast looks right now it may be a while before you have to trek through the snow!

The one good thing about a long extended cold period this time of year is, when it does finally warm up there will be no question whether to tap or not.

the snow is so deep now that even snowshoes are bogging down, all inside work for now. Will it be a fast and furious season?
Just trying to keep snowshoe trails open around the sugarbush so if I have to tap in deep snow I can get around

The snow is so deep 3-4 feet around the trees. Even snowshoes are bogging down. spent the day making trails with snowshoes to and from the maple trees. No way the 4 wheeler will help this year, will be moving sap on a sled it looks like. Saw one forecast that shows warm weather beginning in early March. At least there is time to get everything prepped.

Even if it warms up, will the trees need to unthaw and does a lot of snow aroud the base of the trees slow the sap flow?

Sap started running Monday at 2:00 the releaser was dumping every 2-1/2 minutes. Boiled 240 gallons Monday night to sweeten the pans. Sap ran through the night and had the woods tank full by noon. Boiled 400 gallons last night and pulled off about 8 gallons of syrup.

What is everyone seeing in the Fingerlakes? no snow pack but finally some cold temps! I have a hankering for some fresh syrup!
Also, has anyone sold sap to a microbrewery?

I was in Bakers Maple in Bainbridge, NY a few years ago and there was a fellow in there inquiring about buying sap for brewing. I don't believe they sold any to him due to a shortage of sap for their open house.

ok was wondering what a fair price per gallon of sap would be, I was thinking about $1 per gallon to sell to a beer brewer

If you can get a buck go for it. Never hurts to try.
