What size is the stack, 6"?. If yes, you want about 1.5 x that and no more than twice the sq. inches under the pan. So, if 6" stack, pi r squared is 3x3=9 x 3.14 = about 28 sq. ". you might want 40-50 sq. " sq. under. 1.66-2". Also, while you may want a slight slope after vertical wall at the rear of the firebox, I think you'd push more heat to the pan if the taper is just 1" taller at the front than the rear. You want to make the heat touch the pan real close, with too much space the heat much of the heat just goes up the stack.

Yes it is a 6" stack, I have a bunch more 1" ceramic blanket, so if I understand what you are telling me I should only have about 2-3 inches under the pan? If this is correct I will add more blanket over the bricks to build up the ramp and this will also help with cool down
