Would I be able to run my short mainline into 325 gal poly storage tank and attach a variable speed shop vac to tank? Shop vac has potential for 20+" at about 150 cfm.

You would burn it out in no time. I'm just up the road from you in Greenwood if you want to stop by I'll show you a low cost vacuum system.

Thanks Brian. I figured as much. Crazy minds generate crazy ideas. I will take you up on the visit but probably not until the 14th or so.

where are you in Greenwood? I'm a regular visitor.
I doubt any poly tank would take 20"

Tried it last year with 60gal juice drum and collapsed like a beer can. I also was curious about vacuum so I gave it a shot. Only took about 5 minutes

Thanks for the advice Mike. The idea sounded logical to me. Can you tell me how much lift is required to effect results? My next crazy idea would be stainless hot water tank. I have small diaphragm pump to try. The pump has spec of 12" but small CFM. I have plenty of time on my hands right now to putz around.

That would probably work with a stainless tank, but you would have to shut down the pump to empty the tank

Using a diaphragm pump you can just discharge the sap into an open tank. Then you need no releaser and don't need to stop the pump to empty the tank. A diaphragm pump will pull vacuum on the inlet side and push sap on the outlet side. They can run dry, but don't like ice at all.
