I've heard of it being added to home brews. Other than that and a few people that like unfiltered syrup for it's supposed health benefits there's not much use for it. I throw mine in the compost pile. It tastes awful but is generally harmless as long as you're not using lead or zinc containing taps or collection devices. These metals will be concentrated in the sand. Lead is an obvious problem. Zinc may be in high enough doses.

LOL - Hey Dutch! Nitre is about as useful as sediment in a bottle of homemade wine. I know what ya mean though - being part Dutch myself. lol I'm glad nitre isn't shiny or I'd be saving it in a jar for something or another. I know - It goes against our grain - but - pitch it.

It does have fertilizer value...as it is minerals. Compost or throw on grass area, garden if no leaded products were used.

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I'm pretty sure there's maple running through my veins. All joking aside, I actually buy sugar sand up here on Vancouver Island every spring as well as sap and use it in my foods. I freeze what I don't use right away. The sap pulls out some of tastiest nuances of my coffee beans - particularly the Central American varities. I've been roasting for over 25 years.

I'm moving to California this summer and have reached out to a few suppliers stateside to try and buy more sand & sap next spring but nobody is getting back to me. So... before anyone decides to throw their sand in the compost next spring, think of me. We can always swap for roasted beans.
