I have not seen anyone mention it this year, but with everyone tapping "early", splitting would seem to be a problem even if done correctly. From what I have read and heard on here tapping frozen trees is a no no and where I live the trees are definitely frozen. I realize that to catch the first run you must tap before it comes but thought that waiting for a day near or above freezing was recommended? I will wait to tap until next week and hope for a decent day. I can tap most of my trees in a day or two with a little help but realize large operations can take a week or two so I understand they do this in advance of the season but would think this year splitting may cause quite a loss of vac in most instances?

There is nothing wrong with tapping when trees are frozen. Many prefer to tap when it is 20F or above as the taps are less likely to break, but it has to be done sometimes, especially a year like this. Was talking with a producer in N. VT with close to 70K taps, and they are rushing to finish tapping, and while they prefer to tap above 20F, they are at it to be ready.
