It is aluminum steam pipe wrap thanks! Here is the arch I just have one question do I insulate the rest of the area under the smoke pipe or will it hurt the draft also is the rear of my firebox close enough to the pan or do I need another row of bricks?

Looking at the last picture, showing the stack going up thru the roof, I have a question. Is that single wall stack? If yes, you must protect the wood near it. For single wall, any wood within 36" must be protected or you will have a structure fire. To protect either use ceramic insulation or mount tin spaced out 1" on non combustible spacers. Each such layer cuts the clearance by half. So 1 layer spaced 1" leaves 18" needed, 2 layers each spaced 1" leaves 9" and 3 gives 4.5". If you don't adhere to this, the heat will in time turn the wood into charcoal. Charcoal ignites at about 300 degrees.
If that is an insulated stack, you can go by the manufacturers specs.

what I did was take a 3' X 3' sheet pf galvy, cut a hole dead center, leaving 18" clearance on any side. you're saying I'm still too close and it will eventually char? I ran all last season like that and did not see any charring.
