just when last weekend things looked like it was gonna begin then 3 days of super cold nights an cold freezing days now ..... a blizzard ...... with possible 50 cm of snow, holy frig .only good thing about all this is that theres lots of ice in the collection tanks to keep the sap from spoiling in between boils i guess.this weekend coming might be good for a run or two.cheers and stay safe during the storm everyone

I live where 4 counties all come together in NS. A place called West Loon Lake. How about you? Sounds like you have a big operation with 500 taps. I'm just small and like it that way. Just make about 2 gallons for family. It's some nice making syrup!!!

Yeah, the temp never materialized today. It was +5 around 9am, then dropped to 1 by lunch and didn't increase for the rest of the day. We probably collected 70-80 gals from 750 taps.

cbmapleguy
04-03-2014, 10:17 AM
Slow going these days. The temp finally rose above zero yesterday after 2 blizzards and a hail storm that lasted for a solid 8 hrs. Luckly no damage for us.

Probably collected 80 gals yesterday. We had a good sap night and the temp was +2 this morning and rising so I hoping we might actually get a 'run' today. The sap is running a little better than it was last evening and it's only noon :)

Not much snow here. We had about 8" until yesterday. We received between a foot and 1.5 feet.

The 14 day trend is not looking promising. I doubt we'll be tapping any time soon. More time to get new drop lines and gear set up.

Hi Guys & Gals,

Last spring I decided to take the next 2 years off while we transition from our 300 tap back yard operation to our 90 acre woodlot. This will give me some time to work in the new sugar woods getting ready for pipe and to get around and visit some bigger camps while they are boiling.

Looks like it was a good decision with all this snow. Some commercial producers here in NS have walked away from tapping for this year due to snow.

Good luck to everyone this year!

Today we should to be able to draw some off,our sap has been at 1.5% it takes us awhile to get the first draw. Hopefully we get a good run today to really see how are sap suckers are going to work. Last 2 days have been great for sap running but I fear the sap is getting buddy. The buds are starting so yesterday, after getting the best sap run of the year, I pulled my taps. The sap was dribbling out of the tap hole as I pulled the taps and I almost cried. I apologized to the trees and thanked them for the season and headed for the sugar shack to boil down the sap I collected.
Another year over and it was good fun but too much snow made for a lot of work getting to the trees and getting the sap back to the sugar shack.
See ya next year maple trees!!!!

Hello all,

just joined the site. Started last year doing Maple Syrup, helped at a maple syrup operation about 20 years ago and just bought a property a few years back with 25 sugar maples. Used a turkey fryer last year, not the most efficient way to boil but it will have to do for a few years. I did manage to score a evaporator pan for the 2016 season so hopefully that will help.

Thanks Pibster. Yes time does fly by. Hopefully this winter is a little kinder than last year. My first season for maple syrup was the worst in decades, so I am hoping for a good season this year.

I tapped Wed and Thurs Feb 3 an 4. Had a small run Thurs and a good run Fri. I boiled Sat, got my pan sweeten. Been cold every day, tomorrow Feb 11 is going to be + 6 . Should get another run. This is the first time I tap this early and boil this early since I been tapping trees, I started tapping in 1974. In 1984 I tapped Feb 17 and that was early. Darrell Still working on my new pump and electric releaser.

I'm thinking about tapping on the holiday Monday (15th). Tuesday on looks really good for daytime temps. This would be by far the earliest I've ever tapped.

what do you guys think about tapping early, do you get more yield or is the yield the same just over a longer time ( ie the tree has only so much to give)?

One of the larger producers in in Cumberland County started this Monday tapping, they are cleaning all the spiles with isopropyl alcohol as they tap and using season spiles in alot of the newer areas. It is still early I am going to wait one more weekend myself, that said I did put out one bucket last week and caught half a gallon of sap on last Thursday So its looking like it could be early.

Spent the last couple weekends getting the lines all picked up and set. Move the pump house to the woods. Cleaned out my totes yesterday. Pretty much ready. Looking at the temps it looks like its comming around. Think I'll start tapping at the end of the week. Anybody else thinking about tapping?

Looks like the sap will be flowing early this year!! Here's hoping. I'm going to set a few taps in the yard today just to get a feel for how it's running. Anyone else getting any sap yet?

You can just toss the ice and keep the concentrate at the bottom of the bucket. I only do a couple boils a season and in between boils, I freeze my sap in my barn fridge/freezer in a roughneck food grade garbage can. Everyday I toss the frozen cylinder of ice water that is created thus concentrating my sap and reducing my boil time. Sugar water freezes at a slightly lower temp than water. Next time you see frozen sap, try a piece of ice and notice it just tastes like ice from water not sweet as sap usually tastes like.

had a decent run yesterday. close to 500 gal but sugar content is low, just above 1.

With the lack of fresh sap, we had a chance to bottle everything up so far and add some more taps. 30 taps on one 3/16" earlier this week and ran laterals lines today for another 60 or so taps.
