I am going to line this oil tank arch with 2 layers of 1" ceramic blanket.

Any thought on weather I should just lay the blanket in or should I use the liquid that hardens the blanket?

I don't know. But please tell me more about the liquid that hardens the blanket.

I dont really know anything about it. Its sonthing I found on ebay when I was looking to buy a roll of the blanket. Aperently once you soak the blanket with this stuff and when it dries it "molds" the blanket hard.

Here is a link.

I know some of the pottery kiln sites I looked at use it, but never heard of it in maple evaps. I wonder how much you would need... would just spraying it on the surface be enough to hold it in place on the sides?

Here's a site on ebay that I have bought ceramic blanket from that lists the rigidizer. You might want to contact him for info on use in evaporators. He's located in western PA.

If you are going to put the ceramic blanket on the inside, I would harden
it. It's to fraigle to last in the fire box. If you put it on the outside you
don't have to harden it. I put ceramic blanket on the outside of my home
made barrel evaporator, it works great. I attatched it with drywall
screws and 1/4" fender washers.

Can you post a picture of your rig with the blanket on the outside?

I could have sworn that I have seen new manufactured rigs at bascoms with the blanket on the inside! :? :?

I have seen new rigs with ceramic blanket in them too and I don't think they had any hardener on them.

Ceramic blanket is usually on the inside with no hardener. With an oil fired, it'll hold up fine, commercial ones use refractory SS studs and washers to hold it in place.

I never heard of putting the blanket on the outside, would think the steel would glow red and fail, unless it was fire bricked too, and even then your steel would get way hotter than it normally does.. I might worry about the ceramic fibres being inhaled as they come loose from the blanket, don't think you want them in your lungs because of cancer and respiratory disease risk, or in your syrup either for that matter.

Here's the MSDS for it:

With a oilfired rig use 2600 degree blanket on the inside and you will be fine also you can use 1/4 inch stainless bolts with fender washers and you will find that these will work fine as a fastener and it is only a fraction of the cost of the ones that are sold by any maple equipment company. Try Fastenal company to get the bolts. I have built several archs for my customers and this is what I use with no problems

Also you can get your insulation from Salem Refractories Inc in Londonderry NH. 603 434 6262 cheaper than Bascoms or other suppliers

325abn, I'll try to post some photos of my rig in the next few days if I can
figure out how to.

I have been looking for ceramic blanket on ebay. I see 2 different types listed. One says its body fluid soluble, will that work? It sounds safer but will water dissolve it also? How dangerous is the regular ceramic blanket.

I posted the MSDS links for Kao-Wool the other day. I think basically the same as fibreglass, or anything else that has small particles that you could inhale but that don't break down. No worries if it's closed in and you don't handle it too much.

Just handle it with gloves as it has sharper fibers then regular insulation and you will be fine

It doesn't hurt to add a mask as well.
