View Full Version : Steam stacks into cupola-how far?

I'm running a pair of 8" steam stacks into a cupola and am not sure how far they need to go. Should they go:
1) Beyond the horizontal plane of the bottom of the cupola (so they would be into the cupola a bit)?
2) To the plane at the bottom of the cupola?
or, ...
3) Do they even need to break the plane at the bottom of the cupola?
Inquiring minds want to know. :)
My setup:
New Leader 2x8 wood-fired arch (traditional, no blowers yet)
New Smoky Lake pans and hoods (raised flue)
Both of the hoods have a stack.

My steam stack is not directly under the cupola, so I put a 45 on it and run it to just the bottom level of the cupola, about even with the origin roof line. Works fine.

David , this is my first year with a hood and stacks going into the cupola so no help there! Lol... I have however seen a friends running and his go into it but not by much and it works perfect. I just used 8 ft of stack on mine which put me about level with the door opening.

I run my steam stack into my cupola but it goes higher than the bottom of the cupola. Still some rain falling, but only from the roof of the cupola not the whole roof. Never thought of shortening the stack. Will try that this year.

I've got a steam hood on order. Using 3 standard lengths of stack it will just reach the bottom of the cupola. It's good to hear that it works for you guys. I want to be able to hoist the hood and stack so I can remove the flue pan...sure hope it works for me.

Thanks for the replies. I suppose my main concern is related to the draft and whether the stacks will vent properly if not up into the door area of the cupola. Sounds like if I'm a bit shy it won't affect things very much. Our shack is a 12x24 building with a gambrel roof and a loft. Since we have to go through the loft (about 8' from ground level) at least I don't have to worry about it raining on me!
