View Full Version : Traditional sugar camp meals and/or dishes
Looking for some recipes or ideas of what people eat or serve at sugar camps. I want to put on a traditional meal for some friends that are going to help out this year and I thought it would be a nice touch at the end of the day
Thanks in advance for or ideas

Pancakes ;)
I usually like to take sap from the first part of the syrup pan and cok hot dogs or eggs in it. not very fancy, but gets the job done. I would imagine something savory that you put syrup on or in would count as traditional. I'm thinking you might roast or braise some beef and cook carrots, then put syrup on the finished product. some sweet rolls too would be excellent.

Hard boiled eggs in sap. Sap dogs during the day. Carrots glazed with syrup. Potatoes slow boiled in sap. I get steaks or pork chops and use a wire grilling basket. Open the door and grill them fast over the coals. I'm still searching and inventing new ways.
Brings back some memories. My grandfather and father used to put a few eggs in the pan when they got hungry out came the eggs mustard and pepper
thanks for the ideas, keep them coming

jcb - Did this one this morning. We had about 20 pounds of potatoes sprouting. Salvage or Pitch? Converted them into mashed potatoes - after peeling and boiling and draining - adding cream cheese and milk while mashing. Now in times past it would have been divided and frozen in plastic bags. A friend of my Mrs. said She adds chopped green onions, flour and a couple of eggs to the mashed potatoes and makes into potato patties. We did and browned on both sides and it was ok and then it hit us - They need Maple Syrup and need it now. Wow! What a difference - The maple syrup on the potato pancakes brought out the taste of the green onion, egg and cream cheese. Would be an easy thing to cook in the Sugar Shack. We will be having this again. ---Mike---
