Hello Kentuckians,

Sorry, not tapping in Kentucky... yet.

Looking to narrow down my search to a region/county or two in the commonwealth where we might have the most success locating land with mature maples. Would like to locate near a community of "plain people" if possible. We took a road trip this past year down toward the Columbia/Liberty area and looked at a couple of properties, but came up empty. Would consider staying north of the Ohio River as well, but land values here as astronomical compared to Kentucky.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

SH

I'm somewhat familiar with Kentucky, but don't live there. Sugar maples are found in most of Kentucky, but particularly in the eastern portion. I've seen them in the eastern counties east of I-75. The area between Lexington and Ashland to the east and down to Pikeville in the southeastern corner of the state is typically good mixed hardwood forest including some sugar maple. Maybe some of the Kentucky producers will chime in with a better answer.

in western ky where they reclaimed the land after strip mining, a lot of maples came back, thats why federal grove bed and breakfast makes so much syrup.

Here in Edmonton i see lots of sugar maples. I even know a small 20 acre homestead the guy made about 30 gallons a year just having fun. Its for sale also $90,000 sold by owner.

If you want just land that would be easier then finding a homestead with maples.

Lots of auctions also. Try craigslist and online data bases.

By the way plain folk should be the normal around here anyway, you'd be real disappointing if you were expecting sophisticated fellas just sayin

Thanks for the responses.

I came across the Federal Grove website sometime back, but we have not looked for land in that area - yet.

We also looked online at some parcels for sale between Burkesville and Glasgow (Cumberland County area) - but I was afraid that the syrup season would be too short to make it worthwhile. What do you think?

Just bumping the thread hoping for a response to my last question.

PS: When I said "plain people", I was referring to the Amish and Mennonites :-).

There are Amish in Adams and Highland counties in Ohio . I'm in Clermont county , just east of Cincinnati . I guess location would depend what you do for a living too .
