I can pick up a Welch Duo Seal model 1402 vacuum pump for almost nothing. It is rated at 5.6 cfm and only 1/2 HP.
The manual says to not run it continuously above 10 Torr which I am translating to 10mmHG. Is this the same as 0.4" WC?
Is this usable?

We have run one of the same pumps on approx. 100 taps with the releaser 60 ft below the pump for 4yrs or so with out many problems. They really like the "deeper" vacuum or they will run warm. We try to keep ours around 25" by keeping after the lines. It does seem to draw a little moister into the oil now and than even being 60ft above the releaser. Had to run a lighter oil in the pump for better start up on those cold mornings. We found ours for the right price also.

Thanks Sunny Hill. The more I read about this pump, it does seem to be meant to for deep vacuum only. When it says to run at 10 Torr or lower, I believe that means they prefer to be 10 mm or .4" above absolute zero which would be almost impossible to maintain.
I am encouraged that you were able to run it at 25".

Have one of these on my bench now..have several welch 1397 pumps that I absolutely love...if the 1402 is anything like my other ones it should do nicely...question though...what size is the motor pulley on yours?

I will get back on the pulley sizes. I have not even seen the pump. A friend of mine has it.

Chris; My pump has a 10" pulley, with a 3" motor pulley and motor rated at 1725 rpm.
I just brought it home. My friend just gave the thing to me.
It has no oil in it. What do I need and where do I get it?
