I read or heard somewhere not to tap when the temp is below zero because it will cause the tree to split easier. Is this a wives tale or should I be concerned. This old school winter is making it hard to find time to tap.

You can risk the chance of splitting the tree whenit is that cold.

I can't find a source to back me up but also think the chance of splitting is much greater at very low temps. Very cold trees are brittle. I've been hearing trees cracking all over the place since the very cold weather set in. I think tapping them at these temps may make them run like a pair of stockings. Trouble is you may not notice the split until the sap starts running.
not just below zero but anytime that you are tapping into frozen wood period. A very sharp maple tapping bit is necessary to prevent splitting however doesnt prevent it 100%. I have always tapped, as most do aslo in frozen conditions, its just the way it is if you do not want to miss an early run.
