Complete Operation Lease Price?

I'm throwing this out there for a friend of mine. He has a 1000 tap operation, diaphragm pump vac, 4x12 leader, no RO, electricity provided by a generator. He's taking a year off from sugaring to travel and has an opportunity to lease to a friend. Whats a fair price?

I would say 50/50 is fair. In 1980-1985 I leased a woods in Underhill, Vermont that was 1100 taps with gravity set-up and a 3x12 Leader rig and we split the syrup. In 1986-1990 I leased my 1700 tap woods in Berkshire, Vermont and that was all set up but with no vacuum. It had a new 40 inch by 10 foot Lightning Rig and a three cone filter set-up. We did a 50/50 on that deal also. Times have changed though and most people want something for almost nothing. My guess is most people now a day's would only want to give 5-10 Gallons of syrup and call it good enough.

I agree 50/50 seems fair. I would only lease though to an 'experienced' sugarmaker. Seems simple, the lessee does the work for a year, the lessor takes the risk of returning to a burnt pan, seized generator motor and burned up pump.

If you do it you should request that the person leasing everything get insurance to cover all equipment.Even experienced sugar makers make mistakes.
