Upgraded this year from my 2 pan block evaporator to 55 gal drum evaporator with a 22" x 30" flat pan. I've been looking to insulate the new evaporator and from what I've read it seems like ceramic blanket is my best bet in terms of insulation value. My concern is that I've also read that this material is carcinogenic. Any opinions on this? Am I worrying about nothing? Should I use fire brick instead? Will insulation really make that much of a difference on my little rig? Thanks, justin

You need something to keep the heat in the arch bricks won't do it. Yes I have heard the same. I'm sure fiberglass insulation is a carcinogen but could you imagine if that was ever made public. Where a mask and gloves when installing it. There is a company that has a spray to cover the ceramic for other reasons bit would most likely stop fibers from being released.

Too much of anything will kill you. Enjoy life and make some syrup.

I would firebrick the ceramic blanket against your walls.
Wear a respirator when cutting the blanket. Keep in mind....no one gets out of here alive. Might as well be boiling when ya go.

Crap! I wondered why that cotton candy didn't have any flavor.

Check into Superwool 607 HT, non carcinogenic. Available several places online.
