I moved to Maryland last year from Wisconsin where I caught the bug for backyard sugarin' several years ago.

My new property (near Frederick) has 20 maples. Put in a sample tap last week, it started running this morning so with favorable forecasts I've tapped them all this morning.

Anyone else from Maryland? This is a whole new climate for me, will be interesting to see what we get.

We got about 10 pints of syrup which is better than none! We started well but it was a short season. Only about 5 of the trees really ran. Learned it's possible to tap black walnut which is interesting as our property has about 500 of those.

Tap them real low on the stem if there is a chance you'll want to cut them for lumber at some point.
