View Full Version : raising the arch rail to accomadate deeper flu pan
hey all, looking for advice or suggestions.i bought a DnG 2x8 arch a few years ago.its an older model and was made for a raised flu.im not wrapped around a raised flu so i purchased a complete set of 2x8 pans with a 7 inch drop.2x5 flu pan an 2 18 " syrup pans.now.....i only have a little less than 5 inches of clearance at the shallowest spot on my ramp.anyone ever raise their rail with a material that stands the heat.needs to be raised about 2".thanks

Can you weld? Or do you know someone who can? How wide are your arch rails? Maybe you could weld some angle iron (2 inch high angle by however wide the rail is now) on top of whats there? Or maybe some 2" square tubing? Your pan gasket will add some height, or maybe two layers of gasket will give you exactly the right height? Make a rectangular "frame" the same size as your arch out of the tubing, put gasket between the arch and the frame and again between the frame and your pans. That way you would'nt have to alter/modify the arch at all, allowing raised flue pans to be used in the future should you sell the arch.
Or what about altering (lowering) that shallowest spot so the flue drops in? How much of an area are we talking about? Would it be easier for you to modify the arch bottom?
Getting your pans on this arch is doable, but it all depends on your (or a friend, family member, neighbor, etc.) fabricating abilities.
Good luck and post some pictures of the project.

thanks for the reply,i think i got it a little figured out.i removed the bricks from the last 2 feet of the ramp.with them removed i now have 7 1/2 " clearance to the top of rail.with gasket i should have 7 3/4".so.....now i want to know how much clearance is needed under the bottom of flues and how much insulation i need in the bottom area of this back section of the ramp.
