looking to move from a dairy pump to high vacuum. Water is not an option that is near by. There is potential that I will have 1250 taps on this system. What are my options for vacuum pumps

If you can afford it, you won't go wrong with a Busch pump with variable frequency drive. It's very economical, quiet and pulls very high vacuum. Best decision I've made so far.

I am a big fan of the welch 1397 pumps...it is self contained and runs nicely on a 220 volt 1.5 hp motor...pulls 29" all day at 17 cfm at 25"....you can pick up a used one for a few hundred...things are bulletproof

I'd second that. Absolutely wonderful pump....but they are pricey. If you get one, you want to make darn sure you have a completely bullet-proof moisture trap to prevent pulling sap through the pump. That is a VERY BAD thing for these types of pumps.

After this recall they will be an improved pump; but don't skimp on the moisture trap, they don't handle moisture well.

I guess you are likely not a dealer then.
All in stock pumps went back.

I would surmise it is a gasket issue. These things happen. Doubt it is a major issue. The market is so small for these units the cost of a seal or gasket is far less than bad PR over a problem.
Look at Ford 7.3 D when they had a bad batch of gaskets...they paid for the repairs incurred if you had a bad gasket or it was driver error that caused the failure.
When I hear the cause I will let ya know.
