Has anyone hear of a guy in New Hampshire making a 2x4 or 2x6 evaporator in his garage for about $1200. See attached picture.8175

The guy is Randy Worthen from Spofford, NH. He has a craigslist post @ http://nh.craigslist.org/grd/4220060343.html
I bought his 2x6 last year. He makes flat pans with sections. There are no floats. You regulate the sap flow with ball valves. I think I should of had him customize the arch some. The transition from the firebox to the tunnel under the sap pan is 90 degrees rather than a ramp like most arches. You can see the pics on craigslist to understand what I'm trying to explain. With the design like it is, I managed 15 gph with the flat pans. Best I had was 18 gph. I used a blower/fan into the firebox. I made 32 gallons of syrup with 120 taps & I considered it a success (with a few long days of boiling).

I had Randy make me a pan for my Half Pint a couple of years ago. For the money he did a great job!

I dont know how true this is but I was told the dividers are spot welded and the sap is able to mix from section to section? that would prohibit continuous flow. But I dont own one so others would be able to speak to that better im sure.

I know nothing about this guys pans - but spot welding dividers is not a major issue. Any mixing under the dividers is negligible and after a few boils the gap seals up with sugar. Lots of spot welded dividers out there in use every season.

I have a Randy rig. I'm very pleased with it. 2x4. But now I'm thinking of calling him for a 2x6 plus a couple other things. I've been very happy with my rig and he will be the first I go to when I up size.

I didn't purchase an arch. But I did have the 2x6 pan set up made from Randy. I am very pleased with the product. The dividers are spot welded, but like someone said above, the gaps will fill up after a boil or two.

Randy is a great guy to deal with and will build you a nice evaporator for a more affordable price.
