Is there such a thing and where would I get it? I have a concern that my syrup refractometer is reading off so I would like to check it.
Thanks

Yes - you should be able to get test oil from the same place you got your refractometer. I believe the calibration oil tests at 66.3Brix at 68 F.

I didn't know that. I will have to check that out myself also.

When I got my refractometer I contacted the mfgr. and was told they have no such test fluid. They said to just calibrate it with either distilled water or a syrup of known density. For that you will need a good hydrometer.

Atkinsons sells the 15mL bottle of test oil for $16: http://atkinsonmaple.com/catalogue/equipment/testing/instruments
You will be amazed at how quickly and how much the refractometer can get out of calibration. We try to remember to re-calibrate frequently during the season and every so often the remainder of the year when we're re-packaging.
