I've been sugaring for about 6 years now,and every year there is another addition to the saphouse.add on one year ,add on the next & then you find yourself dismantling part of an add to make anther larger......that being said , where do say enough is enough!!!!!!!!

When some one asks me how big should they build their new sugar house I usually say 40x60 is a good start as long as there is room to add onto at least 3 sides. I don't really know many sugar makers that would say they have enough room for more than a couple years before they start planning an addition.

Nine years and six additions to the original 12x20 building. I suspect this will be our last addition though.

Ya wanna hear crazy? I built the sugarhouse in my photo last year at this time. Right now I'm converting a 24x36(closer to rebuilding than converting) ell off my barn into the sugarhouse that I'll be using this year. At least the other sugarhouse is still good for storage.

It may be the cause of my funeral! Since my brother and I took over the operation 5 years ago we have made modifications to the sugar camp every year. Some were more major than others but we are always tweaking things to get more GPH or lessen the effort to process sap and boil. And that doesn't include the tubing modifications and additions!

Identifying the pinch point, planning how to eliminate it and then doing it if where all the fun is.
