I have a new evaporator set up and I am wondering if the pipe connections for the draw off and thermometer need to be sealed with a high temp sealant of some sort or just tighten them down and hope for the best. Since the pan is open there is basically no pressure on the connections but I was curious as to what everyone else does.

White teflon tape will do it. You'll get a good seal and protect the threads.

Thanks, SeanD. I have a new evap coming in a few weeks from Smokey Lake Maple. Now I know how to get the plumbing done.

Plus, I'm in the middle of building a water jacketed filter/bottler and I was thinking to use that tape for the threaded joints but its good to know others have done it too.

Thank you Sean for the info. Like Andrew I also purchased a Smoky Lake Maple pan (2x4 divided flat pan). Old setup was 3 steam table pans and siphons on block arch. Produced just under 3 gallons last season on 3 boils. Can't wait to try the new pan out. Hoping 50 taps will be sufficient. Still outdoors under a tarp though unfortunately.
