Just out curiosity what types of maples do you tap? For myself about 95% reds, 3% sugars, and 2% silvers. Just wondering how many of us use such a high percentage of soft maples.

I had 136 taps last year and they were roughly evenly split between sugar, red and silvers. I did have 2 box elder also.

99.9% sugar, only a few soft maple. No reds on the farm as they are poisonous to horses. My wife would tap me if one of them died from a maple tree. She would use the 12 ga makes a nice clean hole. LOL

All sugars on my 2 leases, but I have 3 laterals that are reds around my sugarhouse. I have them on separate laterals so they can more easily be removed as their buds pop and the sugars can keep going. In total I have only about 15 red taps out of about 1250 total.

Tap them all, and then pay attention while gathering. Some will run earlier or later in the season, some will run with different kinds of weather, and occasionally, you'll get a tree that just isn't worth tapping. That tree can be of any type, and if the pattern continues, put it in the firebox. Make a space for another tree.

I tap Sugar, Norway, Manitoba (also referred to as Box Elder), Silver and Freeman Maples. I check the sugar content of the sap all through the season and not a single variety underproduces. This past year, I ran out of energy before the trees run out of sap. :D

About 25% sugars and 75% reds.
I was dealt a lot of reds, so that is what I tap. A little less sap but still makes delicious syrup.

About 50/ 50 sugar and red maples. I am thinning the woods I have to develop more sugars. Nothing beats a good sugar maple with lots of sun.
