View Full Version : OK to Re-Filter and Re-Bottle Syrup from March????

I think this is OK to do but I just wanted to get an expert opinion first. I have a batch I made in March and I canned it in mason jars right when I made it. It was not filtered as good as it should have been. I now have new filters and I would like to run a test with them. If I pop open my Mason cans, reheat the syrup on my stove, filter, and then re-can is that OK? I just want to make sure that I will not ruin it somehow. I have a gallon or so total. It's a lot of syrup for me. Thanks! Jason

Yup that's what we all do, just sometimes on a bigger scale; ie from a 30 gallon drum to a qt bottle.

Yes, you can redo it. Just realize that each time you reheat it the color will get a little darker, but dark clear syrup is far better than light cloudy syrup, if packed in glass. In plastic jugs it makes little difference.

Rookie here.. Do you check brix again? Don't you loose moisture every time you heat it up or is this negligible?

In theory you should check brix and grade. If is for you own use I would not be concerned.

Yes, I recheck density, occasionally but seldom need to add distilled water.

Jason, It is always better to be safe than sorry. When in doubt...find out. Everybody here had to learn the craft and most love to share the knowledge. I have had a few people ask if I would ever consider putting syrup in mason jars. I was stunned by the question but the reason was they can and want to reuse the containers. Funny how things go around.
