View Full Version : Does it matter when you pull taps?

Pretty busy and won't get around to removing all of my taps this weekend. Is that OK or is there any reason I should try to get them out as soon as possible?

The sooner the better so the tree can start to heal.

Probably easier to clean if you get them out sooner but the big guys take several weeks to get everything cleaned.

Thanks. I'll try to pull some of them tonight, not sure if I can get to all of them though.

Based upon some research done by Dr. Gary Graham (Ohio State University Extension) funded by the North American Maple Syrup Council, there is no detrimental effect (on wounding) of not pulling spouts immediately, although you certainly should try to do it within about a month or so.

I am having beaver problems!!!! so water is backed up a little I break out the culvers and they are filled back up in a day or 2 haven't been able to pull all the taps as I can't get to them I called the town road agent and he called our local trapper to come take care of the problem so I can't unplug the now plugged up culvert because he needs the water to trap the beavers.... catch 22 for me. guess I will ahve to wait a little longer!!!1 I just wanna be done with it.

When the season ends the three most important tasks are to get the RO membrane washed and removed, get the sap in the evaporator finished and pull the taps. All of the other cleaning will be done after that.

Your supposed to remove the debris from the culvert late in the day and then blast them when they come to repair the dam near sunset.

houses are too close!!! I went down to check things out and the trapper was there. he got 1 last night. old guy been doing it all his life. learned a little in the 5 minutes I was there. was a 2 yr old beaver and he said this about the time the mother kicks them out on there own, because she's getting ready for new babies. They are very territorial so he said there is probably 1 or 2 more at this age and if we can get the parents then tht will really knock them back. so he said proabably 3 or 4 more then that should do it. I hope so they are a PITA!!! only took them 2 days to build up the dam and the culvert completely from what I broke up the other day. makes me nervous though the water which is usually pretty low can back up REALLY fast even with just a little rain when it can't get to where it needs togo and it went up 6" just last night alone!!!

Brad, I have a beaverpond in my woods so I regularly have a problem with them invading my woodlot, apple orchard and sugarwoods. A great way to rid yourself of them is a 330 conibear set just into the water, set a few sticks into the mud to channel them into your set, and put some castor scent on the bank. Here's a few shots of the reason, the action, and the result.

Before other trappers start to complain, the waterlevel dropped just after I made this set; the set WAS underwater when I made it. After I took the picture I reset it further out. Got two there last year. I guess now this topic is "Trapping New Hampshire."

I sure hope those Beavers got their Shoreland Protection Permits from NHDES before cutting those trees.

Actually, I've been working on a Shoreland Protection Plan for a camp on a lake all morning. Sure would be handy to rent those beavers for a few days to take down some trees that are illegal for us to cut.

Ha Ha, it's a heck of a thing when America's largest rodent has more freedom than America's most endangered species; the American tax payer.

(FYI, by "North America's largest rodent" I meant the beavers, not Bill Clinton.)

...especially if you have a wooden leg. ;)

he got 1 yesterday. he makes his own sent concoction from the beaver glands. he's got a pretty good method to getting them. just as you said except he uses a weighted wire and a leg hold trap with a slip thing on the wire once they go down the wire they can't get back up and drown. seems VERY effective.

Yeah, if he's making his own castor and knows how to set a cam-lock drowning-rig then he knows his stuff. Glad to hear the problem is thinning out. I bear the beavers no specific ill-will, but the darned things really make a mess of the woods.

I feel the same they are just doing what they do. They are tireless workers but if humans have an issue we kill it or move it sad to say other humans included!!! just like ground hog, minks, weasels, squirrels, mice moles, voles, racoons, foxes, coyotes and anything else I have killed or moved over my years!!!
