I heard that a few of you broke glass hydrometers. Here is a simple stand that may help. notice the hole in the bottom the syrup will drain through.

Mine sits in a 12 ounce beer tumbler glass. Rinsed with hot water between each checking so syrup left on it is not an issue.

The rinsing between each use is important, i was surprised to see that a coating of syrup on the hydrometer can make it read 2 brix heavy or more!

Indeed it is, the stand is to hold the hydrometer after its use and after the rinse

speaking of rinsing, I rinse in then flue pan, after each use, not hot water, thoughts on this as far as affecting readings ?

Flue pan vs hot water shouldn't matter. Just make sure there is no syrup visibly stuck to it.

An interesting demonstration is to get a batch of syrup that measures perfect on the red line with a hydrometer that has syrup on the upper stem. Then clean it with hot water and re-measure and you can see it measures too high.
