So I got a syrup hydrometer last season, but did not have an easy way to float it. Tried the thermos trick with no luck so last night I finally built a cup, I used 1" copper pipe, cut to about 12 inches crimped and soldered on one end and then soldered a handle on made out of scrap 3/8" copper pipe. Cool thing is the hydrometer fits snugly in the cup while still in it's plastic case so I have a way to protect it when not boiling. Cup takes alot less to fill, can't wait to test it out and start checking my syrup the REAL way :D

Anyone who is cheap like me can built this !

Good on ya. The only thing I'd watch out for is during the hot test, fill it once to pre-heat the copper, then dump it out, then fill it again for the actual reading. Otherwise on the first cup-full of syrup, the copper will quickly suck a lot of the heat out, lowering the syrup temperature and causing the hyrometer to read light.
