If you'd have told me a month ago that I'd be making homemeade syrup this year I wouldn't have believed it.
Well here we are a little over 2 weeks from the time I got the hair brained idea and we have a jug of "near syrup" to be finished.
March 17 The idea popped into my head.
March 23 picked up evaporator taps, tube, and pails. Put in about 45 taps
March 24 more prep work, 43 more taps
March 27 collected sap for first time
March 29 bricking work on evaporator, cut down elm tree for firewood, collected more sap
March 30 RAIN! Picked up more supplies, finished bricking, started a fire to dry out soggy evaporator, then picked up a bit more sap bringing total to 70 gallons.
March 31 Started cooking It took all day to get a system down, but at the end of the day I had a strong 2.5 gallons of 56.6 bix near syrup. Chunked and split the elm (1.25 face cord) as the sap cooked.
