Here are my three evaporators in action. The latest is made from an old diesel fuel tank and an old exhaust stack from some of our old trucks that we took out of service. The fuel tank has several doors to ease in loading and does well with its shallow height in keeping the fire in close proximity to the pans. Looks like the season is slowing in Sterling as I could just see some buds getting close. Decided today to pull about half the taps and will likely to the rest tommorow. Have great season everyone.7572757375747575[ATTACH=CONFIG]

Holy cow. Looks like you're serious enough about sugaring that it's time to "invest" in a single rig that can do all that evaporation, using less than 1/3 as much wood. That must be very tedious trying to tend all three at once...

It is a handful attending to the 3 maple mistresses, they do require a lot of wood. I used to do sugaring 30 plus years ago, but renewed the interest several years ago when my son who is now 9 got the bug. We actually did quite well a couple of years ago at a local fair with a reserve champion ribbon. Looking to build a sugar shack this year and move the ball forward.

Thanks for the compliment it seems to be working quite well and no I am just a hearty and thrifty person from Massachusetts that just like to think of new uses for items which have exhausted their initial intended purpose.

I love to see old junk made into useful things! Great job! Actually, I think they look reasonably efficient; like you said, keeping the pans close to the fire and not putting too huge of a stack on it keeps the efficiency up.

Do you get time to have a soda during boiling ?

I sure hope so !!

Looks like lots of fun though.

Thanks for sharing.

Terry

Thanks, they can really crank through some boils when they are fully loaded. I usually need to do the finish boil on the kitchen stove where the heat is more regulated.

Hi Terry, of course one must always make time for an adult "soda" or two. How is your season going up there?
