welding, soldering or bending divider pan technique

I was looking at some continuous flow divider pans online and noticed some are not welded or soldered on the bottom. Are these formed by bending into a U shape? What is the advantage to this, It would seem it would take a few extra inches of steel also.

It adds overall rigidity to the pan. My syrup pan is actually 4 different sections soldered together.
