how big of opening below grate?

I have a homemade 2x3 evaporator, right now I have a 3x3'' opening below the grate. Is the big enough?

I would go bigger if you have the space,you can always block off some area as you need to after a trial run.

Do you mean a 3 inch x 3 inch square opening to let the air in?

or are you talking about the space below the grates where the ashes build up?

I would say thats too small. I know mine is as wide as the door maybe 8-10"x 5-6"? Adjusted by a sheet of metal

Mine is 2 x 3 also , my ash door below the grate is 4 x 12 aprox. and I
run my door wide open works great
