Previous week summary

Syrup producers report several moderate sap runs occurred this past week Tuesday and Wednesday in central and eastern areas, while southwestern areas had moderate sap runs on Tuesday and Friday. Grey / Bruce had less sap flow activity this past week. Over the past weekend March 16 & 17, very cold weather well below freezing with no daytime thawing has stopped sap flow in all areas of the province.

The syrup crop processed so far ranges from 50 to 60% in early southwestern regions, 15 to 30% of an average syrup crop in central, northern and eastern areas of the province.

The majority of syrup processed to date is extra-light and light colour grade, with medium grade now starting to appear in early areas, excellent maple flavour and quality reported. Very cold weather over the past weekend is expected to keep the colour grades light for the next sap run. So far, the syrup season is progressing normally and producers are anticipating sap flow will continue.

Sap flow predictions

Cold freezing weather is forecast for most of the coming week in all areas of the province and will prevent sap flow, however will recharge maple trees for the next sap flow. Sap flow should resume by the end of the week on Friday and over the weekend with thawing daytime temperatures expected in the long range forecast.

Remember that sugar maple trees that are very frozen can take 3 to 4 days of cool weather to thaw adequately for sap flow to occur. Keep a close watch on the long range weather forecast for next week for better sap flow conditions.

Unlike last year of 2012, it is better to have conditions too cold for sap flow, than have the weather too warm.
