The weather in SE WI has NOT been favorable for maple sugaring, as is probably the same case for most reading this. We have had combinations of switching weather patterns that just have not yielded a good sap run, including lack of freezing at night, days too cold to run sap following a night freeze, and more strange variety of conditions that mother nature has thrown our way that I just don't have the words or patience to try to describe right now. MY QUESTION IS--Is there anything wrong with delicately and evenly reaming out tapholes to "freshen the wound" in the tree, so to speak, to allow for good sap runs when it looks like the weather will straighten out? If I actually follow through with this, the ream will have taken place about 3 weeks following the original tap. Accuweather...HA! More like INaccuweather

Hi some do ream the old holes out, bigger chance of leakage around tap. wound doesnt heal right , so i would just drill a new hole 4 to 5 inches away from the old one, it works best for me, the old hole leaks but soon seals up

I took out some of the 5/16 spiles I had tapped six weeks ago and bumped them up with a few 7/16 spiles. I never got any sap flow with the first taps. Not because of any problem, but just because it was too early. I thought it wouldn't hurt to try freshening up a few of the holes to do a comparison with the ones I left in. Things seem to be flowing right along now.

Ok, I will try it if I need to. Can't be good for the tree to have extra holes punched in it, so I sure hope I don't have to. Maybe they won't heal and seal shut since it's stayed too cold to run sap.
Thank you
