I finally got a great filter setup - 16" flat from Smoky Lake Maple - and my syrup is nice and clean for the first time ever.

I have dozens of quarts of syrup from earlier seasons that have about an inch of nitre and sludge at the bottom. Should I crack all these bottles open, reheat to 180 and refilter? Or just let it go?

I don't sell I just share/trade/give away so it's not a marketing concern it's just that...well, this year's syrup is so nice and clean it makes the older syrup feel bad by comparison.

I’m glad to hear that you finally nailed the filtering process. I’m still working on that one myself. Regarding your question; it all depends on your status in life, if you’re retired, go for it. If you have two teenagers, work a full-time job and are expecting the sap to run any day now (here in Wisconsin, winter is just starting to let go), I’d forget about it. My advice, pours yourself a glass of wine, sit back and enjoy the clarity of your 2013 batch.
