View Full Version : Maple Syrup quality with limesstone in the soil

So being that maple roots are natures best filters, I had a woman who visited the sugarhouse on sunday and she said that her family is from VT but moved near Albany NY and there is a large deposit of limestone up there. Now her father who has sugared in VT all of his life before they moved said that he doesn't like the syrup that they make, and its effected by the limestone. He says its more like used motor oil. is there any truth to this or does this guy have the palet of a mule?

Guess I've never tasted used motor oil, but maybe he should quit using old oil cans as sap buckets.

Franklin County in VT sits on lime stone bedrock--makes some of the best and most syrup in the country. I tend to believe that it's more a soil condition.

St. Josephs Island Ontario has a limestone base. They claim the limestone gives the syrup a special taste. They must be doing some thing right having loads of producers some with 35,000 taps.
