Second year using two steam trays and aluminum stock pot over propane. Got 6 taps and boiled about 65 gallons on Saturday and Sunday. Ended up with almost 2 gallons of syrup.
Working on homemade 2x4 arch for next year.

Picture of setup. Hopefully the last year for this. Went through 60 dollars in propane for 2 gallons of syrup. Good thing I'm not doing this for the money! Not yet anyway!

You do what ya gotta do. Next year you can make more improvements. Nice looking syrup though.
Just boiled mine down. I'll have to finish it later, work summons.

Thanks Don and treetapper.
Question. I now have some niter that has settled to the bottom. Would it be better to reheat and filter again or just pour off the good syrup trying not to disturb the niter.

Either way will work. Pouring off is less energy and time. Heating and running it through a filter would be great if you are going to bottle it. If the case heat to at least 180 deg. But keep it under 200 deg. otherwise you may make more niter.

I'd prefer to look at it this way. For $60 you could have had two mediocre meals with your spouse at an average restaurant.....or........you could have had endless hours of enjoyment for the same $60 and STILL have 2 gallons of syrup to show for it.
Does't that sound much better? ;)

2 gallons is real good for 65 gallons of sap. I got 3/4 of a gallon on my last 60 gallon boil.

Great point Karen!
Jake - It seemed like a lot of syrup to me as well. I sure wasn't expecting that much. :)
