With the right membrane household RO systems can work to remove some water from sap. Larger water purification units can work also, again with the right membranes. The largest difference between water specific RO's and maple specific RO's is that maple units usually have one of several methods for reciculating sap accross the membrane during concentration. This rapid circulation of sap delays the plugging of the membranes by sugar and minerals, allowing higher flow rates for longer periods of time. Maintaining higher flow rates is benenficial for obvious reasons. Whether or not it matters is case dependent on what your goals are for your operation. Another usual difference is much more automation in maple RO's. Usually high temperature shut off auto, high pressure shut off auto, low pressure shut off auto. I like being able to start the wash cycle and go home, it turns off when its done. Non maple RO's won't have that. If I have to walk away for ten minutes and it runs of sap it shuts off instead of buring up a pump, Non maple RO's usually don't have that. Personally I wouldn't touch a non maple RO, but they work well for a lot of people. Depends on your goals.
