My 2x3 pan started foaming at the draw end and produced some dark syrup after about 300 gallons of sap. Drained pan (not a reverse flow) and discovered I have some niter build up. What are my options to remove this scale, chemiclly or mechanically? Will scratching the pan with an abrasive pad (scotchbrite) accelerate niter production due to increased surface area of scratches?

Soak it in straight vinegar or pan cleaner. Then I use the green scrubby side of a sponge or a Doby. Yes, scratches will be places niter will build up in the future.
