Note to self, find an industrial/military use for burnt on sugarsand, after all it's nearly impossible to remove. I'll make a fortune and not worry about how much it cost to make syrup.7265

I'm not convinced the pan is truly burnt on. It looks marginal. Soak it in white vinegar, warm it to about 100-110. Let set, then flush. Next either do again or better, use pan cleaner.
I think the pan will clean up nicely. You caught it just in time.
I guess it doesn't need to be said, keep a closer eye on things (and keep a bucket of sap, or water to dump in an emergency)

Boiling water and vinegar should work, if it stuborn then and SOS pad might be needed

There were a few places that were black and baked on which were quite difficult to chip out but I did get it clean. I had burnt through my stack and shut it down with too much wood and not enough sap in the pan...expensive lesson. I'll be back to boiling tonight though. I still think that there is an industrial use for the black baked on coating...it's very durable.

A scotch pad on a die grinder will strip it off

Pothole repair? You may be on to something.

Glad to hear that you were able to get that pan clean.

Burnt my pan this week also! Tried Easy Off didn't do much! So went to wet sanding by hand. That worked good. Then used a die grinder to clean next to the dividers. After rinsing real well with vinegar water I boiled straight water in it, rinsed again. Now i am boiling sap again!

Boiling some baking soda and water works well too.

^--- X2, it'll even get a burnt/melted on plastic spatula off. Not me, one of the gals in the house. I looked up online and found the baking soda idea, worked perfectly.

Actually, baking soda and vinegar may even be better for the sugarsand.

As far as a commercial use, there was a company that contacted us many years ago - maybe 35 years ago - about black walnut shells (not the outer hulls, but the shells) for use in grinding up into a micro exfoliation cream? Something like that... my sisters all said it was a great company, wish I could recall the name, I'm sure they're still around. Maybe they'd find a marketable use for it? Boy would that make a difference for some of us, eh???!! :)
