Syrup from my flat filters ( one synthetic and three pre filters ) seems to be... well... not crystal clear, not cloudy....clean....but not as nice as I would like it.

Question: Is it due to the flat filtering process itself ? ( I had crystal clear syrup last year??)

Question: Is it not filtered good enough? ( I am getting a 7" short bank today )

Question: Is is caused by running sap @ 10% ? ( no RO last year )

Question: Could it be a combination?

Its just not as clear as it was last yr and I would like it to be better.

Oh, first 10 gallons super clear, last 30 not soo much. 8% on first 10 gallons, 10% on the remainder.

Any suggestions are appreciated

Did you filter the syrup when hot hot hot, or did it cool a little first and take a long time to get through the filter? It is possible you heated it past 185 when bottling? We make sure we are constantly stirring while we reheat for bottling to ensure the syrup on the bottom of the pot does not get to hot and make new sugar sand. We have had both these problem in the past.

Maybe (probably, unless you did something else like reheat after filtering)
Yes (if it is cloudy, it isn't filtered well enough)
No (RO doesn't cause cloudy syrup)
No (RO doesn't cause cloudy syrup)

Thanks Dr Tim. I did bring the syrup up to 185 before bottling in 5 gallon containers. The last little bit was put in a mason jar. This afternoon, yup, crap floating in it. Seemed fine last yr? Dunno. Wholesaled that 10 gallons, new press for tomorrow.
