Finally rockin - except of filtering!

It's my 4th year, and I'm finally getting it going. My cotton filter in the colander just isn't getting it done. I purchased a synthetic cone w/ some prefilters, but they don't come with instructions. I'm guessing that I'm suppose to cut the bottom out of a 5 gallon bucket, attache the synthetic filter with cloths pins and insert a prefilter into the synthetic cone. Correct? Seems like I'm going to loss a lot of syrup to absorption though.

What about a micro mesh (250) flat pan filter. Do they work?

other than buying an expensive filter-canner unit that holds a cone filter; your approach will work.

The important thing is to keep the syrup in the filter hot because once it cools down, it will not filter well. You can also recover much of the absorbed syryp (in the filter) by soaking it in hot sap and dumping it back into the pan.
