I have a homemade arch which was a round 200 gallon fuel barrel. I put a sheet of steel on each side to make a square firbox and made a ramp for the flames to hit the pan. I then put regular brick in against the steel sides. My question is can i put fireboard (cement board) between the steel and the bricks to help insulate it a little more?? Any help is appreciated.

I have a very similar setup. Mine is a 36" piece of gas pipe that i build removable square sides around. I insulated between the square and round sides with regular unfaced fiberglass insulation and it works great. For what its worth

It will most definitely help keep some heat in as well as protect the bricks from breaking when the steel expands and contacts from the heat.
