Bad heart and a broken Arm !!

Playing around this eve with the kids out back and in the garge after supper, I took a few pics of things.

A few weeks ago there was a post about Maple with a bad heart, I think I have one.

Also, found a major broken arm this eve. while looking around. Looks like I have a couple choice trees for firewood next season.

Well the broken one will burn very nicely next year, so there's no loss there. The one with the big hole in it may live and grow for another hundred years, so if it's in a good location, and not too crowded, tap it. All trees are communities of growing, living and dying tissues. The center of a log is pretty much inert, and has little to do with sap production, and more to do with holding the rest up.

I've got two larger trees with bad hearts just like you show in your picture. Those trees were some of my best producers this year. The hollow area is also a great place for my daugters to build fairey houses.
