Im installing a stack thermometer in my small bros 2x6. Im putting it at eye level which puts it in the transition chute just below the first pipe joint. I drilled a hole the size of the thermometer stem but how far do i put it in? There is a clip to attach the thermometer to a pan do i use that on the inside of the chute to hold the thermometer? This is a leader stack thermometer. Thanks in advance for ur help!
You dont need the clip. If your hole is the right size it should stay there nice a snug. Push it in all the way.
I have seen all of them pushed all the way in yes.

If your temp gauge looks like this, then keep the clip in place. I have one of these, the clip keeps tension on the probe and prevents it from swiveling around. With out it - I could not get it to stay in place, it's there for a reason.
