Don - Granted - I live further North then You. But i have never - ever saw an Eastern Blue Bird in Winter. Your pictures are great. A few years back - we had a Loggerhead Shrike visit our bird feeders in Winter. Never saw one before. All the birds fled immediately - Except for a Hairy Woodpecker on a Suet Basket. That was a fatal mistake on his part - the darn Shrike nailed him. He came back a few more times and never saw him again. Wish I would have taken a picture of him. ----Nice pictures. ------Mike------

Nice pictures Don. We have six bluebirds in our backyard that, for some reason, didn't fly south for the winter. They are looking pretty sorry to have made that mistake. There isn't much around for them to eat but I do try to keep some water in a dish for them. If things go above freezing this week that will help, at least with the water situation.

go to a bait shot and buy some mealworms, waxworms or spikes, those bluebirds will LOVE you for it!

Don,Bluebirds are usually a bad sign, meaning sugarmaking is over around here. The real killer is the phoebe, when she comes around and sits outside the sugarhouse window wanting in to make her nest the season is not long after winding down

don- here's a really cool zoomable range map that shows where bluebirds have been sighted during the winter months over the past 4 years. There should be a way to add your sightings to this. If you check off the marker points option you can click on the sighting points to get more info. As I said in another thread they are here year round in my area though it's likely the ones we see in the summer are northern migrants just as yours are probably wintering from points north of you. Same with the robins I often see traveling with them in the same flocks. Hopefully the following link will work for you.....
