My kids and I were out looking at our maple trees and we found at the base of each maple on the snow hundreds of tiny insects. These thing are know bigger then the end of a pin and you could see them on the snow because they are black. They were on almost all the maples we looked at but only the maples. They covered the snow for about four inches from the trunk all the way around the tree. Any one have any idea what they could be? I'm curious.
