I have a 24"long x18"wide pan and a small pan 12 1/2" wide x 18. I was wondering if anybody knew roughly how many gallons per hour I could boil down between both of them??

My math might be a little fuzzy, but I calculate 4.5 GPH, based on 1 GPH per sqft of surface area.

My math also agrees with 4.5 gallons. If you can pre heat the sap you might reach 5 gallons a hour. Good luck Lee

My pan is 24" x 48" I did a test boil with water and figured I was getting about 6 to 8 gallons per hour. This is my first year with the pan and only used water for about 4 to 5 hours. Not sure if the water is an accurate indication of what the sap will do?

spolcik, You are right on again if you pre heat the sap yo can gain a little bit. Good Luck Lee

how do u do the math for that?

Generally, 1 gal water evaporated per sq ft of flat pan surface area per hour. Preheater and forced air will boost this rate.

[(24X18)+(12.5X18)]/144 = ~4.5/hr (assuming 1GPH/sq ft/hr)
(144 comes from 12X12 or 1 sq ft)

GPH also depends on set-up, firing, wood, pans, pre-heated sap etc.

Will a divided pan change that at all? Like this one? 6941

A pan with flues would change the rate as it has more surface area. The pre-heater will have a small positive impact.

Finds formulas there:
http://atkinsonmaple.com/files/SizingEvaporators.pdf

Follow the 3 first statement, except for #2, dry wood, 60% soft, 40% hard

I just built a 2x6 flat for this year and am getting 20gph. I know that sounds crazy, but I am. So just boil and see what you get!

Those calculations at Atkinsons screw me up, I is confused.

It shows to multiply by 1.5 I always thought a gallon per sq ft. Am I reading it wrong or does Atkinsons increase due to ideal boil , wood, sap depth etc. ??

Confused now for sure.
