This is our first year using the 5/16" smart spouts. I drilled a test hole in some scrap wood in my shop and the spout barley fits in. You really have to drive it hard, much harder than the spouts we have used for hanging bags. I am worried about splitting the wood, especially since we want to tap today and the temps are below freezing. Anybody have a similar experience? Anybody drill a slightly larger hole (11/32)?
How far in do you drive them? I can only drive it in about a 1/2" without really wailing on it, but even a 1/2" requires a pretty firm swing.

Thanks for any input.

Well I just went and put one in and I would agree, they don't seem to go very far in when they are seated. This won't be good fo me since I use sap sacks, don't see it being a problem with tubing.

The Leader smart spouts work fine with buckets for me so I would imagine you'd be able to hang a bag ok. I don't find them hard to drive in, but I do go very gentle, no need to drive them in hard or you'll split the wood around the tap hole. Out of the 200 or so I put out I usually have a few get pushed out by freeze/thaw, but otherwise, no problems.

I was referring to the CDL smart spout. I didn't know leader made one called that. Which one do you mean AWS?
