I plan on using a coffee urn for the first time this year. Will post results and outcome. There have been recent discussions about using an urn, regarding temperature measurements, types to look for, etc. I believe the general consensus is to fill with water first and test what temperature the urn heats the water to before shutting off. Once the heater shuts off, dump the water and add the warm syrup.

We use a coffe urn with a water jacket, I adjusted the thermostat to 185 deg. Keeps the syrup hot during packing, I simply turn it to night mode after cleaning and keeps it warm and from freezing during cold nights. Mine hold 5 gallons of syrup in each side and works awesome. We run the syrup from the finisher throug the press and right into the canner. Made of stainless steel and is super easy to keep clean.

I use the exact coffee urn as highway and I second that it is the best way to can syrup! Be fore I got this urn I had an older gas heated urn and had to drain it every night and refill it the next day. That gets old fast! Seven gal at a time. As highway said the night mode is a great feature.

Could you post photos or links regarding this water jacketed urn?

Thanks!

I was looking to fab up (rig) a bouble boiler thing with a spout for this year.

You could save me a TON of grief!

Never mind, as I found $ome on Ebay. Thanks!

Are yours simple coffee pots? OR are they water jacketed?

I "believe" we've got issues with "re-heat" on the syrup for canning causing sugar.

Just coffee pots with heaters in bottom. We take our syrup directly off finisher, threw filter press & into bottlers. Turn heaters on to heat temp up, turn them off after level gets within 2 or 3 inches from bottom.

Pete, got nine at a restaurant supply wear house! If there are any near you check them out. These are commercial units so part are available for most all of them.

Highway, nice setup. How hard is it to set the thermostate for 185? These things are very pricey new. What do you think is the minimum price for one in reasonable shape? Do all the 6 gallon units require 220v? You re-heat your syrup, run through press then into urn? How are you re-heating syrup?

Thanks,
Marc
