Do I use regular vacuum pump oil in an sp11 surge? The pump turns freely and I can here the suction sound. I got it for 3 gallons of dark amber payable if I get it working o.k. No motor, but sits on the original tank. I think somebody drained the oil. I don't see any in the sight tube. Any advice welcome. Thanks

I was using transmisson fluid but now have switched to 10W-30 motor oil.
Tranny fluid is ending up being a little to light weight oil for this vac pump.

I've used vac pump oil from tractor supply for 4 years in my sp22, seems to work fine. I can tell you the right motor and pulley size for that, I've got the chart saved at work, will try to look tomorrow. I also have a complete parts breakdown/ manual for the sp pumps, I need get it scanned.

Thanks. I put some vac pump oil in it that I had on hand. Threw a motor on it and fired her up. She lives and seems very strong. The needle flew right up to 20". I let it run for awhile. No knocks...runs smooth and quiet. I held up on the vac regulator....It maxed out at 26". I let it right off. Just wanted to see how strong the pump was. I plan to run it around 18-20". I had a 3.5" pulley on the 1725 rpm motor for this test. I would apreciate if you would tell me the right pulley size. I'd rather run it on the slow side because of its age and to avoid overheating issues. I want it to last as long as possible.

Brian, a 3.5" pulley is the factory size for a 0.85hp 1725rpm motor. They also sold them with a 0.55 hp motor and a 3.25" pulley. You should be fine running it at 22" all day long.

Thanks Andy. How full should the oil be in the sight tube?

my sight tube is only clear for a 3" or so piece at the bottom, I just keep it centered in that. I know the manual covers this, I'll try to remember to look tonight and get back to you.

We do the same - keep the oil centred in the sight tube.

Great deal on a good pump! You'll be happy. Our SP22's are all but maintenance free.

I just brought my SP-22 to life yesterday. The sight glass was broke. I reworked the tube with a clear plastic tube, changed out the surge 4 way fitting with a T for the sight tube and put in another T for a fill tube and a drain so when I change the oil no fuss no muss. Put in 5w-40 Shell snythetic. It fired right up and seemed to be pulling good, got the 15inch weght to activate. More to learn an operating this old girl. Can I get a PDF file on the manaual please Mapleack. Thanks. just a power wash and a walk to the woods.

My sp22 has a piece of copper pipe around the glass that is about 1/2" long. I believe it is for a level indicator

No copper on my site tube. Just clear tube from top T to bottom T....Clamp at top & bottom. So I guess 1/2 full is the way to go. Andy..... Does the manual say anything about this? Thanks.

Brian, looked at the manual i have, it says that and sp11 takes approx 1 qt of oil and to see the instructions on the pump. My sp22 has a plate on the head that says that 1/2" of oil should show in the sight tube when not running. I assume that sp11's had a similar plate. Yours may or may not still be there or be legible.

I found the tag....It says only 3/8" oil up in the site tube. Thanks.

The speed is more important than the horsepower. If it is a 1725 rpm motor, then 3.5" max on motor pulley. If you want to take it easy on your pump then go with 3.25" or even 3" I think the max rpm for the pump is 485 or there abouts. The 3.25 should give you 467 rpm @ pump......The 3" should be 431 rpm. These figures are with a 12" pulley on pump.

Brian do you know what the original belt length might be for an SP-11? I have one that I put a 1725 on with 3.5 pulley but there was no belt.

SP22 takes a 60" belt, but that is with a 14" drive pulley instead of the 12" on the sp11. My manual doesn't list the length for the 11.

Thanks Andy I put a 50" on it last night seems to be ok. I think it could work with a little longer one maybe maybe up to 54" or 56". For now 50" seems to be ok.
